Newborn photography is a special and unique genre that requires careful consideration of every aspect of the photo shoot. Choosing the right props can be a game-changer in terms of creating beautiful and memorable images. After twelve years as a newborn photographer in the Boston area, I’ve accumulated quite the prop collection. But in the end, I’ve found my favorites. Here are the five props that I use in pretty much every newborn session.
A stretch jersey wrap is a versatile and essential prop that can be used to swaddle your newborn in a variety of ways. It’s soft, stretchy, and comfortable for your baby, and can be used to create a range of different looks and poses.
Cheesecloth wraps are another essential prop that can be used to create a variety of looks and poses. They’re lightweight and have a gentle texture, making them perfect for wrapping your baby’s soft skin in a delicate and dreamy way.
A knit wrap is a cozy and warm prop that can be used to create a range of different looks and textures. It can be used to wrap your baby or as a background prop to add depth and dimension to your images.
A bowl or basket can be used to create a range of different looks and poses. It can be filled with soft blankets or fabrics (using some of my other favorite props) to create a comfortable and secure space for your baby, or to add texture and depth to your images.
A neutral-toned blanket backdrop is a simple and timeless prop that can be used to create a clean and classic look. It provides a neutral background that allows your baby to be the main focus of the image.
By using stretch jersey wraps, cheesecloth wraps, knit wraps, bowls or baskets, and neutral-toned blanket backdrops, you can create a variety of different looks and poses that put the beauty and innocence of your newborn in focus.
Now that you know my favorite props that I have in-studio but also in my kit for in-home sessions, let’s set up a time to plan your newborn shoot! If you live in the Boston area, check out my photography packages and then get in touch.
The last 13 years as a Boston portrait photographer has taught me that I would rather document the whole of life, and not just parts. This led me to a focus in everything from sweet newborn photos to family portraits, maternity and motherhood portraits and senior photos.
Look forward to an intuitive experience that is more communicative than not (no details missed or advice not shared), and with custom, modern and light filled photos that are hand-edited to be framed and passed on.
