The holidays are upon us, which means magical moments are unfolding every day. From decorating the tree and baking cookies to cozying up by the fire and opening presents, these memories deserve to be captured and cherished. But you don’t need to be a professional photographer to take beautiful photos of your kids at home. With some advice and a little practice, you can create images that you’ll treasure for years to come. Here are my 4 tips for taking better photos of your kids at home.
Natural light is the most flattering light for photography. Position your child near a window or open doorway, ideally at a 45-90 degree angle to the light source. This will create soft, even lighting and avoid harsh shadows. Avoid shooting in direct sunlight, especially during midday, as this can create harsh shadows and blown-out highlights. If you’re shooting outside, find some open shade under a tree or on your porch.
The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset are known as the “golden hour” for a reason. The light during these times is soft, warm, and magical. Take advantage of these times for outdoor photoshoots to capture that beautiful golden glow.
One of the most important tips for photographing children is to get down to their eye level. This creates a more intimate and engaging perspective. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different angles and perspectives to add variety to your photos.
Imagine your photo divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically. The rule of thirds suggests placing your subject at one of the intersecting points of these lines to create a more balanced and visually appealing composition.
Don’t forget to capture the little details! Close-ups of your child’s hands, feet, or expressions can add a touch of intimacy and personality to your photos.
Some of the most beautiful photos are the candid ones. Capture your kids in their element, decorating the tree, baking cookies, or playing with their toys. These spontaneous moments often reveal the most genuine emotions and expressions.
Think about the story you want to tell with your photos. Capture a series of images that document a specific activity or event, like building a snowman, opening presents, or enjoying a holiday meal together.
Resist the urge to over-edit your photos. Keep the edits subtle and natural to preserve the authenticity of the moment. Simple adjustments like brightness, contrast, and cropping can enhance your images without making them look overly processed.
Phone Apps:There are many user-friendly photo editing apps available for your phone. Lightroom Mobile is a great option for making basic adjustments and adding a touch of creative flair to your photos. Bonus – there is a free version!
With a little practice and these simple tips, you can capture beautiful and meaningful photos of your kids at home. Remember to embrace the moment, have fun, and let your creativity shine through.
